Fáilte!
I’m Paddy (Patrick), and I’m a Statistics PhD student from Shanahoe, Laois, Ireland (Seanchua Abú!).
I’m currently based at the University of Bath, where my research lies in Extreme Value Theory, with a focus on clustering algorithms for the Conditional Extremes model of Heffernan and Tawn [1], with applications to environmental extremes. I am supervised by Christian Rohrbeck and Jordan Richards. We have just added a paper on clustering for the Conditional Extremes model to arXiv, which can be found here, with the related R package CeCl available on GitHub. Other research interests include Bayesian statistics, spatio-temporal modelling, epidemiology, and statistical computing. My work is funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) through the Centre for Doctoral Training in Statistical Applied Mathematics at Bath (SAMBa).
I hold a BSc in Statistics from University College Dublin (2020) and an MRes in Statistical Applied Mathematics from the University of Bath (2024). Between these, I gained experience as a Statistician and Data Scientist at Lubrizol and Airfinity, and as a Research Assistant in the HIV Inference Group at Imperial College London. These roles involved work on Bayesian modelling of industrial gear oil, COVID-19 vaccine demand forecasting, and Bayesian spatio-temporal modelling of circumcision coverage in Africa. While at Bath, I’ve also worked with the Institude for Mathematical Innovation on risk modelling for landslides in Brazil.
Outside of academia, I enjoy playing Gaelic football for Bristol Harps and hurling with Séan Treacys in London.
At Bath, I have also tutored the following undergraduate courses:
- MA12002 Programming (Python)
- MA10211 Probability & Statistics 1A
- MA10212 Probability & Statistics 1B
